A horizontal lifeline system can be designed for fall restraint or fall arrest. It typically connects permanent anchor points with a horizontal cable, allowing workers to move safely across rooftops and elevated work areas while remaining connected to the fall protection system.

Working at height rarely happens in one location. Maintenance teams, window cleaners, and facility personnel often need to move across rooftops, around skylights, mechanical equipment, and other fall hazards to complete their work. Traditional single-point anchors can restrict movement, requiring workers to repeatedly disconnect and reconnect as they travel.
Horizontal lifeline systems solve this problem by providing continuous fall protection along a defined path. Instead of limiting where work can be performed, an engineered horizontal lifeline allows workers to move safely and efficiently while remaining connected throughout the job.

HLL System Types
Hands-Free Horizontal Lifeline
A stainless steel 5/16-inch cable system uses a travelling runner that follows the worker and passes intermediate brackets without requiring disconnection. This provides continuous hands-free protection and uninterrupted movement along the system.

Double Lanyard Horizontal Lifeline
The double-lanyard system is generally more economical (used by agalvanized or stainless steel 5/16-inch cable system to maintain 100% tie-off) than a hands-free system, although workers must correctly transfer between connection points.

Inspection and Maintenance
Horizontal lifeline systems should be inspected regularly by qualified personnel. Anchor points, cable assemblies, runners, brackets, and shock absorbers should be checked for wear, damage, and corrosion.
Systems exposed to corrosive or harsh environments may require inspection more frequently than once per year. Pro-Bel also provides inspection, testing, and recertification services to help maintain system performance and compliance.
