Specific height requirements for allowable vertical free fall during a fall arrest situation are similar across Canada. However, each province has its own regulatory requirements. Herein is a list of the allowable vertical free fall distances listed by Province and Territory.
- Alberta: 2 m or less as specified by the manufacture of the fall arrest equipment.
- British Columbia: 1.22 m
- Manitoba: not listed in regulations.
- Newfoundland: 1.22 m
- New Brunswick: 1.2 m
- Nova Scotia: not listed in regulations.
- Northwest Territories & Nunavut: 1.25 m
- Ontario:
- Construction Reg.: not listed.
- Industrial Reg.: 1.5 m
- Window Cleaning Reg.: 1.5 m
- Prince Edward Island: 1.22 m
- Quebec: 1.2 m
- Saskatchewan: 1.25 m
- Yukon Territory: 1.22 m
*Alberta regulation states 2.0 m or to manufacturer's specification. Allowing for 2.01 m vertical free fall or one specified by the manufacturer, which ever is less of the two.

Inspections are typically required annually or as prescribed by the manufacturer
Generally the fall hazard or restrictive area is 2m or (6ft) within the edge of a roof that has a parapet wall or guard rail that is less than 42" tall.
For temporary (rental) powered platforms we typically recommend the following electrical power outlet requirements to be supplied by others.
Outlet Type: Weatherproof outlet with strain relief eye-bolt anchor.
Voltage: 208V
Phasing: Single Phase
Frequency: 60 Hz
Amperage: 30A
Voltage Drop: No more than 3% Drop in Voltage at any outlet
Receptacle:
- Safety-Shroud, Twist-Lock
- HUBBLL No.: Female - HBL2620SW
- NEMA No.: L6-30R
Location: Power outlets may be located on ground and/or on roof level at each elevation of the building 75ft to 100ft apart. Provide 13 mm diameter stainless steel eye bolt for strain relieve anchor at each outlet (by others)
Safety Anchors
- Working Load 1,000 lbs
- Test Load: 2,500 lbs
- Factored (Ultimate) Load: 5,000 lbs
Davits Arm System
- Working Load: 1,000 (1,250 lbs for permanent powered platforms are dedicated to roof)
- Test Load: 2,500 lbs (do not test without test prescription from Pro-Bel)
- Factored (Ultimate) Load: 4,000 lbs
USA (Federal OSHA)
Fall Arrest:
- 5,000 lbs (non-engineered system)
- Safety factor of at least 2 (engineered system).
Please Note:
- OSHA 1910.140 (c) (13)(i) states that anchors "shall be... capable of supporting at least 5,000 lbs (22.2 kN) per employee attached."
- OSHA 1910.140 (c) (13) (ii) further specifies that the anchors shall be "Designed, installed and used, under the supervision of a qualified person, as part of a complete personal fall protection system that maintains a safety factor of at least two..."
